October 2003
Pete is a good friend who has helped us all out with goat problems. Pete
and Denise care very much for their goats and are active on the
HomedairyGoat list.. FOr Pete it started many months ago when Denise's
dad ( Art ) was getting progressively worse. Being a diabetic, his
kidneys were beginning to fail. When they did give out and he had to go
for dialysis, and you could see he was getting extremely tired and worn.
He would have his good days and bad. Now we were 1600 miles away from
them and Art was getting worse. Denise spent time there helping her mom
( Pauline )
and dad but it wasn't the same as when we lived just across the street.
On her last trip home her dad was in really bad shape .... he was in and
out of the hospital and no one could figure out what was wrong. When she
left he was just starting to show improvement. Soon after he made a
complete turn around and was back in good health. I had mentioned some
time before that I would be willing to be a donor. This was done with a
great deal of thought and talking it over with Denise. Art was not on a
transplant list at that
time but now he was going to Tucson to get a complete check and if it
went well he would be on the list. I at that time restated my offer to
be a donor to Pauline and asked her to talk with Art's doctors at the
transplant center on there visit. A few days later Pauline called and
said I should call the center and tell them of my offer. She said they
had indicated a non related live donor would be a very good thing "IF"
we were a match.
The following morning I called the transplant coordinator at the U. of
Arizona transplant center and after a series of basic questions was told
the process. I then received in the mail the blood test kit and
instructions. I set an appointment with my local doctor to have blood
drawn and it was sent over night to Tucson. One week later I received a
letter telling me we were a match and what the next step was. This
involved a full physical and other tests ... the results of which were
faxed to Tucson. Again a wait (waiting is the hardest part ) but then
the call came saying all looked well :-)
Now it's on to Tucson where still more tests and meetings with staff,
doctors and surgeon. This step is set for 12/02/03 and will last a week.
After that we set the date for the procedure.
It's harder to write the "why" of all this and you would have to know
Art and Pauline for this part. They have been like my own family and
have done so much to help Denise and I over the years. They accepted me
with out question and have made their home open to us on many occasions.
They are
family and it's just the right thing for me to do.
Thank you,
Liz Neadow
